Online Courses

It is unbelievable to think that the idea of a classroom will only be that of a memory. It is crazy that one day, I might tell my children “back in my day, students actually sat in a classroom with a teacher for an hour or so at a time.” Then they’ll look at me like I’m crazy because that’s not what their generation is to. As much as I myself dread waking up sometimes to get to class, I do enjoy listening to good teachers thoroughly explain a concept. I guess I take advantage of it, and don’t appreciate it as much as I should.

I myself am a visual learner. I like being able to see the teachers put an example on the white board, and then raising my hand if I do not understand. I believe online classes would obviously, completely change the learning experience. I have avoided them completely, because I doubted my own success if I were to choose that option. I felt that I would better succeed with an expert of the subject in front of me as I take as many notes as I can.

I understand that converting to online classes is for money purposes, because it’s cheaper, but I think that should not be the case in the first place. Many universities are ridiculous when it comes to tuition cost, but it is what it is. Under graduates, and their parents have been managing it for years. There are many plans students have figured out to make it work, and I honestly believe what it comes down to, is how bad you want it. Whether it’s getting loans, finding scholarships, or attending a junior college first, on top of getting the little help from financial aid, there are ways to somehow do it.

Profile

Who is Leana? Of Mexican descent, this young and enthusiastic girl is following her goal to be a court interpreter. Hernandez wants to help translate words and phrases to people in the language they speak. She found that the communities of the English speaking, Spanish speaking, and even the Mandarin speaking are the top three spoken languages in America so she is very interested in strengthening English and Spanish, the languages she knows, as well learning Mandarin. This is for these speakers of other cultures to gain a better understanding of what is going on in the courts. The young college student even wants to help the deaf community, as she also wants to learn sign language in both English and Spanish. Though she is interested others, it is the Spanish language that she is currently going to keep her big focus on. The intelligent and the first generation college student of her family is a Spanish Major at the University of La Verne.

Why Spanish? Spanish is her and her culture. Hernandez comes from born and raised parents of Mexico. The two parents migrated from Mexico to America where they had two girls to be raised in the US, but to also be knowledgeable about where they come from. The two girls being twenty year old Leana and her eight year old miracle baby of a sister. Her younger sister is a story in herself, but worth mentioning, being that she was not suppose to be born with all of the complete abilities that other people are born with.

Digging deeper into her roots, Hernandez decided to take the People and Cultures of Mexico class during her January term break at the University of La Verne. It was simply to learn more about where she came from. Hernandez finds herself more and more interested in the people, language, and culture of Mexico. In fact her boyfriend was also born and raised in Mexico. She enjoys taking trips to Mexico such as places like Tijuana where she took a short vacation over winter break. Hernandez embraces her Mexican culture and continues to expand her mind with the language, people, and history.
